How to Care for a Display-Only Collector Sword
A four-step routine for inspecting, cleaning, lightly oiling, storing, and documenting a display-only collector sword.
Keep a display-only collector sword dry, minimize contact with bare hands, wipe the metal after inspection, apply only a thin suitable protective oil, and store it in a stable low-humidity environment away from children and unauthorized handling.
1. Inspect safely
Clear the area before removing the object from its scabbard. Support the blade and fittings, avoid touching polished metal, and never swing or test the object. Record any condition change with dated photographs.
2. Wipe the surface
Use a clean lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints, dust, and old excess oil. Do not use abrasive compounds or household cleaners unless a qualified conservator recommends them for the exact material.
3. Apply a light protective layer
Use a very small amount of suitable conservation or blade oil. The surface should look protected rather than wet. Keep oil away from materials that may stain or soften, including some wraps, lacquer, wood, and leather.
4. Store and document
Store horizontally or in a stable purpose-built support, away from rapid temperature changes and high humidity. Keep the product record, measurements, photographs, and supplied provenance together.
